Ninety-Five percent of Azerbaijan supports Baku bid for 2020 Olympic Games

According to a nationwide survey, 95 per cent of people in Azerbaijan support the Baku 2020 bid, and 93 per cent of respondents believe that hosting the Games in Baku would have a positive impact on sport throughout the country.
TNS Global research company conducted a survey according to which 95 percent of Azerbaijan's population supports hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020 in Baku.
Half of the respondents noted that if the Games are held in the capital city, they will buy tickets, while 30 percent expressed willingness to be volunteers.
Executive director of Baku-2020 Organizing Group Konul Nurullayeva said the survey's outcomes coincided with their thoughts.
"The National Olympic Committee, various sport federations and large public community make great efforts to support hosting the Olympic Games in Baku".
She added, "Azerbaijan has a very young population - more than 50 per cent are under the age of 30. With this bid, together we can inspire and empower millions of young sportsmen and women, together we can accelerate the development of team sports as well as introduce new sports into the country.
"And if we are awarded this great honour, with the Olympic Movement, together we can spread the values of Olympic movement to a region of the world that will benefit enormously from these values, putting sport and its importance at the forefront of our society". Baku 2020 is a bid by the city of Baku to host the 2020 Summer Olympics. The IOC will announce the official candidate cities on May 23, 2012. The winning bid will be announced on September 7, 2013 at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires.
Baku bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics but did not become a candidate. Those games ultimately were awarded to Rio de Janeiro.
The city hosted many sporting events, including Rhythmic Gymnastics European Championships in 2007 and 2009, 2005 World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships, 2007 FILA Wrestling World Championships and 2010 European Wrestling Championships, 2011 World Amateur Boxing Championships, 2009 Women's Challenge Cup and European Taekwondo Championships in 2007. The city will host the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup and the Eurovision Song Contest 2012.
