Azerrail Baku seal away victory over French rookies

Azerrail Baku claimed on Wednesday night their second victory in Pool C of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Champions League – Women as they beat French rookies ST-Raphael Var VB 3-1 (25-16, 25-21, 18-25, 25-20).

Anna Kajalina, Irene Gomiero and Michaela Abrhamova set the pace of the game for the home side in the first set but Azerrail soon took control and easily cruised to a compelling 25-16 win. After a close start to the second set, Azerrail made it clear they wanted to take this one as well – and they did so with the help of Edina Dobi, Danica Radenkovic and Katerina Zhidkova. The hosts from France started making mistakes and provided their opponent with an opportunity to break away even though Liesbet Vindevoghel tried to put up a fight for the home side. However, Azerrail did not lose composure to claim a 25-21 victory.

The local fans did not stop cheering their favourite players on – and they responded in the best way, putting on a show in the third set where they edged ahead at the second technical time-out (16-11). Abrhamova was the real star player for ST-Raphael Var VB at this stage of the match as she showed her skills in attack and defence to contribute to a 25-18 win.

Azerrail claimed an early lead in the fourth set with the help of Zhidkova before the home side fought back to 9-9. The visitors broke away at 19-17 and never looked back, eventually sealing their 3-1 victory at 25-20.
