On October 6th Azerbaijan`s Prosecutor General Zakir Garalov met Secretary General of INTERPOL Roland Noble.
Garalov praised the cooperation between Azerbaijan and INTERPOL.
He lauded the Azerbaijani President`s work to modernize the country`s justice system.
Garalov highlighted what had been done in the country to strengthen the legal basis of prosecutor agencies and protect human rights and freedoms.
The Prosecutor General recalled Noble`s 2003 visit to Azerbaijan.
"During that visit Azerbaijan and INTERPOL came to agreement that Azerbaijani prosecutor officers will participate in joint events by INTERPOL and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Lyon in 2010. This contributed to deepening the cooperation between Azerbaijan and INTERPOL."
Garalov also touched upon the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, saying separatists were planting drugs and smuggling nuclear technologies in Azerbaijan`s occupied territories.
"This is a source of threat to the whole region. At the same time, the money separatists make by smuggling drugs are spent on creating illegal military units and purchasing weapons," the Prosecutor General said.
Noble praised Azerbaijan`s cooperation with INTERPOL`s general secretariat and the organization`s member countries.
INTERPOL`s Secretary General hailed the Azerbaijani government`s legal reforms, in particular laws to combat crime and strengthen the protection of human rights and freedoms.
