Azerbaijan`s Minister of Justice Fikrat Mammadov met with visiting chairman of the PACE Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights Christos Pourgourides and committee`s member Elsa Papadimitriou.
The minister hailed Azerbaijan-CoE cooperation.
He spoke of human rights reforms conducted in Azerbaijan thanks to President Ilham Aliyev`s will and provided information about the progress achieved in modernization of the judicial system, creation of administrative courts and improvement of penitentiary system.
Christos Pourgourides, in turn, praised Azerbaijan`s achievements in the field of human rights protection, adding "Azerbaijan is the way ahead of neighboring countries in terms of positive democratic changes."
According to press service of the Justice Ministry, the meeting also discussed modernization of penitentiary infrastructure, training of justice workers and other issues of mutual interest.
The PACE delegation also visited the newly constructed Baku Detention Facility and familiarized themselves with the conditions for prisoners.
In the same day, Christos Pourgourides and Elsa Papadimitriou met with members of Public Committee on public control of penitentiary system.
During the meeting the PACE delegation was informed about the activity of the Committee and its cooperation with law enforcement bodies.
