Azerbaijani Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmar Mammadyarov has met High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini on the sidelines of the 71stSession of the UN General Assembly in New York.

They discussed the current state of and prospect for development of ties between Azerbaijan and the EU, and expressed mutual interest in maintaining the cooperation.

The sides reaffirmed their readiness to start negotiations in order to improve the partnership to a new stage, adding there is great potential to expand relations in energy, transport and agricultural spheres.

The Azerbaijani FM spoke of the current state of the negotiations to solve the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, and noted that the continuation of the occupation of Azerbaijan's territories by Armenia and its destructive and provocative policy undermines the resolution of the dispute and ensuring regional peace and stability.

Mammadyarov said Azerbaijan supported substantive negotiations on the settlement of the conflict.

Federica Mogherini noted the European Union supported the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Azerbaijan, saying the organization was interested in the peaceful solution of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict.
