On February 17th Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and his spouse Mehriban Aliyeva inspected construction of National Gymnastics Arena in Baku.
Minister of Youth and Sport Azad Rahimov informed the Head of State and his spouse of the work carried out at the Arena.
He said the facility would host different sporting and other events. The Minister said there was a special complex for conducting trainings for gymnasts. Mr. Rahimov said the capacity of the 5,000-seat facility can be increased to 9,600 seats for international tournaments.
The Minister said the Arena would host European gymnastics championship this June, adding competition in six gymnastic events would be held here as part of the inaugural European Games in 2015. He said that in 2019 the Arena would host the world gymnastics championship, a qualifying event for the 2020 Olympic Games.
President Ilham Aliyev and his spouse Mehriban Aliyeva watched the training of gymnasts.
The Arena offers courses for coaches organized by the International Federation of Gymnastics.
Women gymnasts from Turkey, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Mexico and Hungary have had trainings at the Arena in the past two months.
Canadian, Czech, Greek and Finnish gymnasts will have trainings here in the near future.
The President and his spouse were presented the uniform of the national gymnastics team.
