Georgian President tours Nakhchivan city

On February 28th visiting Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and chairman of the Republic`s Supreme Assembly Vasif Talibov toured the city.
First, the two visited national leader Heydar Aliyev`s monument in Nakhchivan.
The Georgian President put flowers at the monument.
The President became familiar with the Heydar Aliyev Museum.
Saakashvili was told that the Museum`s mission is to study and popularize prominent political figure Heydar Aliyev`s rich heritage, give an idea to the future generations and foreign visitors about his large-scale activity in achieving Azerbaijan`s socio-economic and cultural progress.
The President was informed that “the Nakhchivan period (1990-1993) of Heydar Aliyev`s political life, who gave his consent to lead the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic after the persistent request of Nakhchivan people on 3 September 1991 is one of the magnificent pages of Azerbaijan history. Heydar Aliyev establishing the perfect model of struggle for independence and large-scale state creation in this relatively small region made Nakhchivan the ideological and real activity center for the independence struggle of Azerbaijan. Namely, thanks to Heydar Aliyev's initiative, the national state symbols of Azerbaijan were first time accepted in Nakhchivan, the "Soviet Socialist" phrase was extracted from the name of the Autonomous Republic, the work of local agencies of the communist party was ceased, the referendum for the continuation of USSR was refused, and the decision was taken to name the Supreme Soviet as the Supreme Assembly (Supreme Majlis) of the Autonomous Republic.”
The Georgian leader watched a film devoted to the rich political carrier of the national leader.
The President met students of international relations and foreign languages faculties of the Nakhchivan State University.
Saakashvili was informed that the Nakhchivan State University was founded in 1967. At present on 47 specialties in 11 faculties about 5 thousand students are studying in Nakhchivan State University. Highly qualified specialists are getting their higher education in bachelor, master and doctoral levels. More than 300 foreign students from around 10 countries are studying at Nakhchivan State University.
Nakhchivan State University enjoys broad relations with universities of the USA, Georgia, England, China, Russia, France, Germany, South Korea, Turkey, Egypt Arab Republic, Pakistan, Iran, Uzbekistan and other countries.
The President chatted with local and foreign students and wished them successes.
The Head of State also visited “Gamigaya” furniture manufacturing factory.
Chairman of Nakhchivan Supreme Assembly Vasif Talibov informed that construction of a number of industrial enterprises gave great impulse to development of the industrial sector in the Autonomous Republic. The Chairman said some 400 industrial enterprises are functioning in Nakhchivan.
The President was presented with a keepsake here.
President Saakashvili also visited “Gamigaya” industrial complex of food products. The Georgian leader saw samples of raw materials, toured production sections and become familiar with the goods produced by the enterprise.
The Head of State viewed the production process and tasted the complex`s products.
