Azerbaijani permanent representative to the UN Yashar Aliyev has said the country committed one million U.S. dollars to the UN mission charged with fighting Ebola.

In an interview with the United Nations Radio, Ambassador Aliyev said Azerbaijan announced its donation at the International Conference on Ebola Recovery held at UN Headquarters in New York.

“Ebola outbreak is a problem not only for the countries that can potentially be hit by this deadly and dangerous disease, but also for the entire international community, first of all, for the United Nations.”

“That's why Azerbaijan is actively involved in this process. We would like to make – within our capabilities – a simple, but useful contribution.”

Mr Aliyev highlighted the problems faced by Azerbaijan in the first years of independence, the conflict with Armenia, problems of refugees and IDPs who emerged as a result of the occupation of the country`s lands. “The international community helped Azerbaijan then. We do not forget all these facts and will never do. Once a recipient, Azerbaijan has already become an active donor country. We do not forget kindness.”
