The 5th Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) Global Conference is now underway in Paris. The conference will focus on how the EITI is making a difference to the nearly half a billion people in 24 countries around the world who now have access to reliable revenue figures from the natural resources of their own country.
The following 5 countries have status as EITI Compliant countries: Azerbaijan, Ghana, Liberia, Mongolia and Timor Leste. In these countries, the EITI has contributed to trust building, improved natural resource governance, civil society engagement and improved business environment.
In Paris, there will probably be a few more countries that have achieved compliant status. The EITI Global Conference is the EITI movement`s coming-together. Last time the conference welcomed over 500 participants from across 80 different countries. The 5th Global Conference in Paris will be an opportunity to discuss the impact of the EITI, share lessons learnt from implementation and address future challenges for the EITI. As an international forum, the Conference is a platform where EITI Board Members, International Secretariat and EITI stakeholders can discuss key issues with each other, the broader international community, while engaging new countries to join the effort in transparency over financial revenue in the extractive sectors.
The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) increases transparency over payments by companies to governments and to government-linked entities, as well as transparency over revenues by those host country governments. It was announced by Tony Blair, the then-Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa in September 2002. Ghana, Nigeria and Azerbaijan piloted the EITI approach. As of January 2011, EITI was implemented in 33 resource rich countries around the world. 23 countries have produced EITI reconciliation reports.
