“The increasing prestige of Azerbaijan, which strengthens its position among the most economically developed countries, also contributes to expansion of international relations of Azerbaijan State Telegraph Agency AzerTAc,” Aslan Aslanov, director general of the Agency told journalists during the 16th meeting of the Council of Heads of State News Agencies of Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS Information Council) in Baku. Mr. Aslanov noted AzerTAc is one of members of the world`s largest news alliance. “At the same time the Agency maintains active bilateral cooperation with several leading news agencies.” Mr. Aslanov pointed out today AzerTAc heads two leading organizations. “The Council of Heads of State News Agencies of Commonwealth of Independent States is one of such regional news agencies. In accordance with the statues of this organization former director general of Russia`s ITAR-TASS news agency Vitali Ignatenko chaired it for many years. Today the incumbent director general of ITAR-TASS Sergey Mikhaylov was elected as the Council`s new chairman.” According to Mr. Aslanov, the 16th meeting of the Council of Heads of State News Agencies of Commonwealth of Independent States discussed some issues which are of great interest for the region. The director general added news agencies have to solve more important issues in the globalized world. He also noted the Council contributes to realization of several fruitful events to coordinate the activity of news agencies and expand exchange of experience in information community covering a certain part of both Europe and Asia.” Mr. Aslanov said participants of the 16th meeting also discussed such matters as internet journalism during the rapid development of information technologies, relations between social networks and traditional media. AzerTAc director general said one of the issues on the agenda of the meeting was holding events on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. “Azerbaijan should take an active part in these events. Because, thousands of Azerbaijanis lost their lives in fight against the fascism.” Touching upon the Azerbaijani side`s proposals at the meeting, Mr. Aslanov said: “We said that this year marks the 90th jubilee of national leader of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev. The national leader is not only the builder of modern Azerbaijan, he is also a world known statesman who made significant contributions to development of social, economic and humanitarian spheres of CIS countries. Peoples in CIS countries have respect for him. So, news agencies of member states of the Council decided to widely cover events devoted to the 90th anniversary of national leader Heydar Aliyev.”
