Chairman of Russia`s State Duma Sergey Narishkyn met with bishop of Baku and Azerbaijan eparchy of Russian Orthodox Church Alexander Ishein.
Ishein updated the guest on history of orthodoxy in Azerbaijan and cathedral, traditional tolerance in the country and peaceful coexistence of religions and relations established between the religious figures of two states.
The Cathedral was built in 1909 with support of eminent Azerbaijani Maecenas Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiyev. The building was restored by support of Azerbaijani businessmen Aydin Gurbanov. In March 24 2003, national leader Heydar Aliyev attended the opening ceremony of the Cathedral.
Bishop of Baku and Azerbaijan eparchy of Russian Orthodox Church congratulated Narishkyn on election to the post of Chairman of Russia`s State Duma and the highest award of Azerbaijan - "Dostlug" (Friendship) order.
Ishein gifted a book "Patriarch Kyrill" published in Baku in Azerbaijani and Russian languages, the forward to which has been written by Chairman of the Caucasian Muslims Office Sheykh ul-Islam Allahshukur Pashazade.
Sergey Narishkyn donated icon of St. Nicolas the Miracle-Worker to the Church and signed the guest book.
