A document entitled "Germany and European Union's new South Caucasus policy" was discussed in European Commission's representation in Berlin. The document was prepared by the German Society for Foreign Policy (DGAP).
The discussions were attended by Eberhard Sandschneider, Otto-Wolff-Director of the Research Institute of the DGAP, Gernot Erler, Erler Gernot, deputy head of the Social Democrat Faction in the German Bundestag, former Minister of State at the German Federal Foreign Office, Patricia Flor, special envoy of the Foreign Office for Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia and Rainer Lindner, Executive Director of the Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations.
The document particularly underlines Azerbaijan's importance, and urges Germany and the European Union to intensify relationship with the country.
According to the document, the importance of the South Caucasus region, as well as the Caspian basin has increased for Europe in terms of energy security and economic interests.
It goes on to say Azerbaijan has developed rapidly to become the leader of the South Caucasus region, and the country is an important energy partner of the European Union in the region.
The document draws the attention to Azerbaijan's favorable geographical position and successful policy of the country's leadership to ensure economic development and political stability.
The document also hails Azerbaijan's successful and well-balanced foreign policy.
Touching upon the unresolved conflicts in the South Caucasus region, the document says the fact that 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territories are under Armenian occupation is a threat to Europe's security interests. It calls on Germany and EU to increase efforts towards settling the conflict on the basis of norms and principles of international law.
