A conference dedicated to the 20th anniversary of independence of post-Soviet republics was held in California`s Chapman University, US.
Opening the conference, professor of the University James Coyle devoted the first panel to Azerbaijan. Coyle spoke of achievements gained in Azerbaijan over the past 20 years of independence. He said the first democratic republic in the east, Azerbaijan Democratic Republic established in 1918 adopted women`s suffrage, one the first in the world. After restoring its independence Azerbaijan developed rapidly and became a leading country of the region, built strong ties with West in energy, security, fight against terrorism and other spheres. Azerbaijan plays an important role in intercultural and inter-religious dialogue.
During the conference, regional analysts Vladimir Sokor, Alexandros Petersen, Steve Levin touched on independence history of post-Soviet republics, praised their policy of integration into Euroatlantic structures and activity on economic security sphere.
The speakers also pointed out that such countries as Armenia may not make independent decisions and their policy has a negative impact on regional development and Euratlantic integration.
Following the conference, Azerbaijani flag was raised at the "Global Citizens Plaza" square in front of Chapman University.
Newly-appointed ambassador of Azerbaijan to the US Elin Suleymanov was awarded with "Benjamin Franklin Medal for International Cooperation". Acting consul Ramil Gurbanov will present a medal to the ambassador.
