On October 27th, Secretary-General of the National Commission of Azerbaijan for UNESCO Gunay Afandiyeva made a report in the 36th session of UNESCO`s General Conference.
In her report, Afandiyeva touched upon Azerbaijan`s contribution to the activity of UNESCO, spoke of state policy to encourage dialogue between civilizations, cultures and nations. She recalled Azerbaijan`s hosting a number of international events such as World Intercultural Dialogue and International Humanitarian Forums and the 18th session of International Bioethics Committee (IBC) of UNESCO.
Azerbaijani representative stressed First Lady of Azerbaijan, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, UNESCO and ISESCO Goodwill Ambassador Mehriban Aliyeva`s contribution to dissemination of universal values, protection of world cultural heritage. She provided information on culture, education, science, health projects realized by Foundation not only in Azerbaijan, but also in various countries.
Afandiyeva also pointed out that in the wake of the Armenian aggression Azerbaijani territories were occupied and one million Azerbaijanis became refugees and IDPs. She also spoke of cleansing policy of Armenia against Azerbaijanis and destruction of graveyards and temples in the occupied territories.
Secretary-General highlighted the importance of application of relevant UNESCO conventions and the need to increase efforts within framework of intergovernmental committees.
She thanked all member states which supported Azerbaijan during elections to UN Security Council and highlighted that the country would continue to spare no efforts to promote international security, mutual respect and inter-civilization dialogue in the future.
