Azeri deputy justice minister, chairman of the Penitentiary Service Lieutenant-General Nazim Alakbarov has met Carola Lander, first vice-president of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), and Darmen Zhumadil, Drug Control Officer at the INCB Secretariat.
Alakbarov informed the INCB delegation of the number of prisoners held at the detention facilities across the country, as well as drug addicts treatment in prisons and what the penitentiary service had been doing to prevent drug smuggling in detention facilities.
Alakbarov said there was an increase recently in attempts to smuggle narcotics through Azerbaijan.
"There are favorable conditions - in Azerbaijan's Armenia-occupied lands, which are even out of control of international organizations - for narcotics production," the Penitentiary service's chief regretted.
Lander highlighted the activities of the International Narcotics Control Board. She said assisting member countries in solving narcotics-related problems and increasing public awareness were key priorities of the organization.
Lander said they would inspect relevant situation in Azerbaijan before making their recommendations to the government on technical and legal assistance.
The International Narcotics Control Board is an independent and quasi-judicial monitoring body for the implementation of the United Nations international drug control conventions. It was established in 1968 in accordance with the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, 1961. It had predecessors under the former drug control treaties as far back as the time of the League of Nations.
