On December 11th First vice-speaker of Azerbaijan National Assembly Ziyafet Asgarov met US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor at the United States Department of State, Thomas Melia and his accompanying delegation.
They discussed a wide range of issues, including prospects for development of relationship between Azerbaijan and the United States, energy issues, joint cooperation in fight against international terrorism, expansion of ties between legislative bodies.
Asgarov said Azerbaijan was interested in strengthening cooperation with the United States, adding reciprocal visits contribute to development of bilateral relationship. “Azerbaijan and the US are strategic partners. We are cooperating in fighting against terrorism and international peacemaking processes. Azerbaijani soldiers have served in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kosovo to ensure pace and security.”
Ziyafat Asgarov spoke of Armenia`s policy of occupation and ethnic cleansing against Azerbaijan. He said Azerbaijan had suffered terrorism, adding Armenia committed genocidal acts against Azerbaijanis.
Melia praised Azerbaijani soldiers` active participation in peacemaking operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kosovo. He said the United States was interested in deepening relationship with Azerbaijan, adding the fact that the visiting delegation represents various circles proves this.
