Estonian delegation visits Azerbaijani parliament

On June 28th visiting Chairperson of the Estonian Parliament Ene Ergma visited Milli Majlis, the Parliament of Azerbaijan. The Estonian delegation was welcomed by Speaker of the Milli Majlis Oqtay Asadov and other officials.
The visitors first got acquainted with the parliament and highly assessed the working conditions created for the activity of lawmakers. Further, they familiarized themselves with the Heydar Aliyev memorial hall in the parliament.
The Azerbaijani speaker and the Estonian Speaker first held meeting in private and then were joined by both delegations.
Speaker of the Milli Majlis Ogtay Asadov, praising the relations existing between the two countries said that the ties between the two countries have ancient history.
"After gaining independence, relations of both countries marked a new era of development. Reciprocal visits by heads of state, as well as negotiations conducted, documents signed were a good contribution to developing the relations," Azerbaijani speaker added.
Highlighting the special role of the parliaments, and friendship groups in the legislative bodies, he praised the cooperation of parliamentarians at international institutions.
Touching upon the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Speaker Ogtay Asadov said that Azerbaijan was committed to peaceful solution of the problem within international legal norms and principles, while Armenia did not want to give up its aggressive policy. Then, Mr. Asadov spoke about the importance of the joint declarations signed in 2009-2010 between the Azerbaijani and Estonian presidents.
According to the document, the Karabakh conflict must be settled peacefully in the framework of international norms and rights, especially on the basis of the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, and principles of the OSCE Lisbon Summit on sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of state borders.
For her part, Ene Ergma expressed pleasure of her being in Azerbaijan saying "I couldn`t come to Azerbaijan earlier, but today I have this change to be in a such beautiful country. Azerbaijan is a beautiful country indeed."
The Speaker also mentioned the role of parliaments in developing intergovernmental relations, saying the joint activity of MPs during the international events contributed to boosting of relations in other fields.
Speaking about the processes undergoing in the Southern Caucasus, E. Ergma said "official Tallinn considers Azerbaijan as a friend. Our position on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has not changed. We favor just resolution of the conflict"
Then, the sides exchanged views on importance of bilateral meetings, as well as prospects of developing cooperation in the economical, humanitarian and cultural fields.
