Azerbaijani parliament`s speaker meets Ukrainian counterpart

On April 19th Speaker of the Azerbaijani parliament, the Milli Majlis, Ogtay Asadov met chairman of the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada, Vladimir Litvin. 
Asadov said friendly relations between Azerbaijan and Ukraine had deep roots. He expressed confidence that Litvin`s current visit would contribute to boosting Azerbaijan-Ukraine relationship. The speaker underlined the importance of reciprocal visits in terms of expansion of bilateral ties.
According to Asadov, due to efforts of the two presidents relations between the two countries have reached the level of strategic partnership. He said more than 120 interstate and intergovernmental documents were signed between Azerbaijan and Ukraine.
The speaker praised the bilateral economic cooperation, adding trade turnover between the two countries exceeded 1.5 billion dollar.
Asadov also underscored the role of parliaments in development of bilateral relations. "We have fruitful cooperation within CIS PA, GUAM, OSCE, Euronest PA and other regional and international organizations."
The speaker said more than 500.000 Azerbaijanis living in Ukraine play important role in boosting social and economic development of the country.
Touching upon the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Asadov said this problem puts obstacles to development of the country and establishment of peace in the region. Asadov thanked the Ukrainian government for the just position on the conflict.
Litvin, in turn, said his country attaches great importance to expansion of relations with Azerbaijan. He noted friendly relations between the two countries` presidents create great opportunities for development of bilateral cooperation even more. Litvin also praised Azerbaijan`s international prestige that the country gained over the past 20 years.
The chairman stressed the role of legislative bodies in development of bilateral relations. He also underscored the importance of expansion of relations among regions for development of bilateral cooperation.
On the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Litvin noted his country regards that the problem must be solved on the basis of resolutions of the UN Security Council and the principle of territorial integrity of states.
The sides exchanged views on cultural and humanitarian cooperation between the two countries, and preparatory work for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Then, chairman of the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada gave an interview to journalists. He praised the current level of Azerbaijan-Ukraine relations.
