On May 20th Speaker of Azerbaijan Parliament, Milli Majlis Ogtay Asadov met visiting President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek.
Asadov said integration into Europe was one of Azerbaijan`s foreign policy priorities.
He briefed Buzek on the economic accomplishments in his country. Asadov added Azerbaijan was an active participant of global projects. The Speaker underlined Azerbaijan had great role in Europe`s energy security. He also underlined the importance of Buzek`s visit to Azerbaijan.
Asadov pointed out relationship between Azerbaijan and EU was developing within the framework of the Eastern Partnership program. He added the establishment of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly opened a new stage in "our relationship".
The Speaker said Azerbaijan had joined all international agreements on protection of human rights.
He stressed the cuontry`s legislative basis was brought into line with European standards.
Asadov highly appreciated the resolutions adopted by the EP on the need for an EU Strategy for the South Caucasus and European Neighborhood Policy - Southern Dimension.
He added the fact that the issue on human rights was discussed at the EP on May 12 was "unexpected for us". The Azerbaijan Parliament appealed to the EP expressing its concern over the issue. "We regard that such issues should be discussed within the framework of the Euronest PA."
Buzek, in turn, said Azerbaijan was a valuable country of Europe. He expressed hope the meetings he held during the visit would be important for both Azerbaijan and EU.
Buzek pointed out the EP supports Azerbaijan`s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Following the meeting, Asadov and Buzek briefed journalists.
