President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso visited the Baku State University (BSU) where he was awarded an honorary doctor diploma.
Speaking to the ceremony, the BSU`s rector, MP, academician Abel Maharramov spoke of Barroso `s life and activities.
He said national leader Heydar Aliyev always attached special importance to development of relations between Azerbaijan and EU, and President Ilham Aliyev successfully continues this policy.
Maharramov then read out the decision of the BSU`s Scientific Council to name the European Commission`s President an honorary doctor.
Barroso made a speech at the ceremony. He thanked the Council for honoring him with the honorary doctor diploma.
Barroso noted the history of BSU was closely linked to the history of modern Azerbaijan. He called Azerbaijan as one of EU`s important partners. He also praised the energy cooperation between Azerbaijan and EU.
Barroso also touched upon the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, saying the fact that the problem has not been resolved yet is an impediment to peace and stability in the region.
He also added the EU fully supports Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity.
